Why this website exists
The Netherlands is full of places where landscape and history meet. Some are well known, while many others lie beyond the usual tourist routes: vanished villages, old dykes, cemeteries, chapels, forts, remains of locks, burial mounds, courtyards and nature areas with a remarkable past.
The Netherlands Beneath Your Feet makes these places easier to find and explains what you can still see there today. The place itself always comes first. The story should help you look more closely, not replace the visit.
The selection does not focus on commercial attractions, but on places with particular historical, cultural, natural or landscape significance. Places where the past can still be seen, sensed or imagined.
Once you know what happened in a place, you look differently at the landscape that lies there today.
Looking more closely
Not every day out needs to consist of twenty stops. A good route leaves time to walk around, read an information board, view a church or dyke up close, take a detour or simply pause for a moment.
